Engineering is the way that science and math play together in the real world and exposing kids early to engineering takes the fear out and puts the fun in. The Engineering is Elementary curriculum, made by the Boston Museum of Science, consists of 20 units that complement any standard elementary science curriculum. Each lesson is based on a short story where a child from somewhere in the world faces an community problem and solves it with the help of engineering. I think kids totally connect with the stories and learn naturally how engineers use the engineering process to help solve problems in the world. The lessons are set up so that kids work in groups to develop and test out their own ideas for solving the problem before they see how real engineers actually solved it. Each unit consists of an excellent teacher guide, storybook and materials and all work critical thinking, collaboration and creativity skills.
This curriculum costs, but is very well designed.
